Easy Blue Hawaiian Recipe
While you may have seen a blue hawaiian drink recipe with coconut rum, we can assure you that is not how the drink is supposed to be made. In this post, we’ll break down exactly how to properly make this beverage, as well as give a bit of background on it for the cocktail nerds out there.
What Alcohol is in a Blue Hawaiian Recipe?
The Blue Hawaiian cocktail is a combination of light rum, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and coconut cream. This cocktail is a very popular drink, and it is served in many beach side restaurants and bars. Not to be confused with the Blue Hawaii, which many suspect this drink got its namesake from, this version includes cream of coconut instead of sweet and sour mix, and omits the vodka to focus solely on the light rum.
How did this cocktail get its name?
The Blue Hawaiian gets its signature look from the inclusion of Blue Curacao, an orange liqueur created by Bols, a Dutch distillery. Given its coloring, one would not guess an orange flavor, but this is due to the presence of food coloring in the liqueur. While Blue Curacao was a fairly modern addition to their catalogue, Bols is anything but a newcomer in the industry. Tracing their roots to 1575, Bols claims to be the oldest distilled spirits brand in the world. While they have many liqueurs in their arsenal, Blue Curacao was a Bols original concoction! In fact, a sales rep from Bols went over to Hawaii in 1957, seeking the assistance of acclaimed bartender Harry Yee to popularize their new creation, Blue Curacao. Eventually Harry Yee settled on the Blue Hawaii, which if you were paying attention, is the drink that preceded the Blue Hawaiian!
How The Cocktail Consultant Staff Like to Enjoy This Cocktail
While this drink can be shaken, we recommend blending it to maximize the tropical sensations you get when sipping the Blue Hawaiian. If you were looking for a blue hawaiian on the rocks recipe, simply refrain from blending the ingredients. We tend to like our frozen drinks nice and icy, so we would recommend adding more than 1 cup of ice cubes to the blender. Then, simply pour the other ingredients into the pitcher and blend!
